New season, new intern students

With the start of spring come the preparations for a new field season… and the arrival of new internship students who will get to experience what it is like to work in an experimental field ecology lab!

In April, we welcomed interns Marine Dange and Ilko Sijbesma. We asked them to introduce themselves to you:

Hei !
My name is Marine, I come from France. I am in the first year of a master’s degree in energy and environmental engineering at INSA Lyon, and I am doing a 5-months research internship in the “Between the Fjords “ research group. I will be working on the DURIN project, which explores the role of dwarf-shrubs in climate responses and feedbacks : more specifically I will work on assessing the thermal tolerance of their leaves, specifically exploring the different ways heat stress can be characterized. I am excited to work with the research team !

Hi! My name is Ilko Sijbesma. I come from the Netherlands and study Applied Biology at Aeres University of Applied Sciences in Almere. Throughout my life, I’ve been deeply interested in plants and the ecosystems around them. Before this internship, I worked on several plant- and insect-related projects and remain very passionate about these topics.
This year, Between the Fjords, as part of the DURIN project within UiB, has offered me an amazing internship where I’ll be working on flux measurements in certain plants. I’ll be focusing on data analysis in plant ecology and am really looking forward to the field research in the beautiful Norwegian landscapes. I expect to experience nature like I’ve never seen before and to learn a lot about Norway, its ecology, and what it’s like to be a researcher at UiB.
Personally, I’m especially excited about the fieldwork in northern sites such as Senja and Kautokeino. I’m truly thankful for this opportunity and excited to get started!

Welcome, Ilko and Marine! We look forward to working with you!
